A Man's Cookie?

Perhaps...
but this just happens to be a favorite cookie of mine!
Why?
Let me count the ways!!!

#1)An Oatmeal Cookie that doesn't contain cinnamon in the ingredients!
#2)Doesn't use "room temperature" butter, so you can whip up a batch at a moments notice!
#3)Uses chopped pecans. . ."Mr. Ed" loves anything with pecans!
#4)Made from regular ingredients found in most cupboards or pantries!

This recipe makes a generous amount of the
best oatmeal cookies e v e r!

I made my special co~workers 1/2 dozen each.
Why?
Just to show my gratitude for all their help and kindness!!!

"Mr. Ed" helped tie them up in their "treat bags"!

On Crooked Creek ~ a full plate of A Man's Cookie!

Cookies for eating. . .
cookies for sharing. . .
cookies for savoring another day in the freezer!

A Man's Cookie
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup Crisco Shortening

2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

2 cups oatmeal
1 cup flake coconut
1 cup chopped pecans

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the sugars and the Crisco.

Add the eggs and the vanilla flavoring.

Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture.

Stir in the coconut, oatmeal and pecans.

Drop by spoonfuls on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 10 ~ 12 minutes.

Makes: 48 cookies

Saturday @ Studio One!

Our Church is hosting a reception in honor of one of our Chancel Choir members. Our member is moving and therefore will no longer be attending Choir practice on Wednesday evenings.

So~o~o. . . my dear friend( and Choir member) sent me an e~mail asking if I would make one of my Handmade Cards with a Vintage Flair for the honoree.

The only thing my friend ask for was that I include the phrase. . . "those who sing pray twice".

Many times when others admire my art, they want to know:
* What do you use to make your cards?
* Where do you get all the embellishments?
* How long does it take?

I only use the finest scrap booking archival acid and lignin~free papers I can find. I prefer those that best depict Victorian era wallpapers.

Choosing a floral print ~ roses are my preferred floral paper ~ and a complimentary more subtle print for a background gives the designer more flexibility. Too many patterns can be distracting from the overall appearance of the hand made card.

I purchased quality, economically priced, blank cards and envelopes in ivory. The yellowish hue appeals to the vintage appearance.

Once the background has been glued to the face of the ivory card, I then ink the edges. This instantly ages the appearance bringing about that Vintage Flair!

Using scrap pieces of the papers ~ I hand cut each piece to make the embellishments!

These little sharp scissors are the backbone of my designing!

Here you can begin to see the makings of cut~by~hand embellishments.

Let the designing begin!

Once the embellishments have been cut ~ by ~ hand, they are laid atop the face of the card to begin the outward appearance.

More than ample pieces are cut to ensure that once the design is put into place, the process doesn't have to start and stop, extending the length of time for the entire process.

All the pieces tediously cut ~ by ~ hand and laid on paper for the inking process.

Resting side ~ by ~side, the embellishment on the left has been inked for aging.

All embellishments inked and drying before assemblage.

While allowing the ink to dry, I print the text of the Handmade Card with a Vintage Flair. Every time I attempted to take a Calligraphy course, due to lack of enrollment, the class was canceled. Perhaps one day the opportunity will arise, until then, I use fonts from my computer.

The text in place using foam dots for three~dimensional affect, the embellishments are added layer ~ upon ~layer. Both side frames and one rose embellishment have been applied.

Layering atop of the left side frame and the already strategically placed rose, a rose cluster is adhered with more foam dots for greater dimension.

The completed face. . .with a total of seven hand cut embellishments!

This process is repeated on the right side of the inside of the card.

Again, embellishments are added until the desired design satisfies the eye of the beholder.

The left bank of embellishments are usually more weighted in vintage design.

When looking for vintage papers, I try always to include designs with birds!

Now that the card is finished. . .it is placed on an easel for the completion of the drying process. I suggest a minimum of eight hours for all adhesives to dry thoroughly.

On to the envelope!

At Studio One the envelope must posses the same Handmade Card with a Vintage Flair appearance!

Most always, I use the same background on the outside of the envelope; however for this particular card and its recipient, I felt it would be too distracting.

The inside of the envelope receives as much attention to detail as the outside.

Several embellishments are added to the upper half of the interior of the envelope.

Care must be taken when placing the card inside the envelope!

The final answer. . . each Handmade Card with a Vintage Flair can take from four ~ to ~ six or more hours! Each handmade card @ Studio One is truly, a labor of love. More than a hobby. . .it is my passion!

Valentine's Day ~
is not a holiday that "Mr. Ed" and I have spent together often ~ until now, that is!

Now that "Mr. Ed" is officially retired, not only did we spend this Valentine's Day together, he actually helped prepare our Valentine's Day Dinner!

Valentine's Day Dinner On Crooked Creek was celebrated using my heirloom Classic Rose China and silver.

Choosing to serve a three ~ course menu of some of our favorite dishes~ instead of too much formality, seemed to be a perfect choice!

Course One: A Green Salad ~
Simply consisting of iceberg lettuce greens, celery slices, carrot curls, cashew halves and a Sweet Honey Catalina Dressing.

Course Two: Pork Chops with Rice ~
A treasured family recipe of Smothered Pork Chops with Mushroom Rice.

Course Three: Decadent Dessert Cups ~
Belgium heart ~ shaped dessert cups filled with White Chocolate Custard topped with Whipped Topping and Chocolate Curls accompanied with Raspberry Tea.

These silver candlesticks were a Antique Mall find that are similar to my MoMa's heirloom pieces. The faux rose candle rings are reminiscent of the pink sweetheart roses used in our wedding.

Belgium chocolate cookies fill the silver compote for a decadent sampling. In the background is the Valentine's Day heart ~ shaped box filled with Russell Stover's Pecan Delight's. . .my gift to "Mr. Ed".

"Mr.Ed's" gift to me. . . the newest in my Willow Tree Collection. . .Anniversary figurine. It's collective name ~Love ever endures ~ is truly a statement of the love we share for one another. In the background is the first Valentine's Day Card I gave "Mr. Ed" after our marriage.

"For My Sweetheart on Valentine's Day" is at the top of the card. . ."Happy Valentine's Day" and "With All My Love" is at the bottom. I still pen every card I give to "Mr. Ed". . ."With All My Love".

Instead of using place cards, I choose to use a Valentine's card and a vintage Valentine postcard " A Loving Thought" dating 2/14/1910.

As we spend this Valentine's Day Dinner On Crooked Creek together, I hope that you are surround by love, as well. I leave you with the words on the bottom of the card ~only visible when folded shut~ as you enjoy viewing more photos of our Valentine's Day Dinner.

NEW Look in the Art Studio!

We all have places and spaces where we create the things that give us pleasure in our homes. Some of my dearest blogging friends sew, some crochet, some paint. . .
Me? I play with paper!

The past three years, I owned and operated Studio One, where I designed and created Handmade Cards with a Vintage Flair. What began as a hobby to make greeting cards for friends ~ grew from request to make cards for their friends and acquaintances. Thus. . . a home based business was born!

In January 2012, I closed the business part of Studio One. With "Mr. Ed's" Retirement in December 2011. . .I decided I wanted to spend more of my hours doing things with him than working in the Art Studio every afternoon!

So~o~o. . .
the past few weeks, I've been re~arranging my space in the Art Studio with all of the things that give me inspiration! I've snapped a few photos and vignettes to share!

WARNING: Studio One is in the unfinished part of the lower level living area On Crooked Creek. Be prepared to see open duct work, concrete floors and walls. Sometimes. . .it's down right frightening!!!

An heirloom hat box, belonging to my MoMa, and a vintage white milk glass bud vase holding pink Sweetheart Roses rest on the top shelf. This bookcase holds inspirational items as well as resources for making Handmade Cards with a Vintage Flair!

My all time favorite resource is this book from Anna Griffin. I draw inspiration from her beautiful scrap booking pages and her story of her Grandmother's influence on her life! I filled a concrete planter with vintage lace for more inspiration in Studio One!

More inspirational resources and vintage items to keep my creative juices going!

Classical and Bluegrass Music are one of the "must ~ haves" On Crooked Creek for creating!

My favorite CD's are placed atop a vintage crocheted doily in a vintage card catalog drawer for easy access.

NO shortage of resources @ Studio One. . . Home Companion, House Beautiful, Tea Time, Traditional Homes, Victoria magazines. . .and numerous spiral journals full of ideas for upcoming creations!

Just in case. . .yes! there's a PFAFF sewing machine in that case atop the vintage French Provincial sewing machine cabinet. (Ladies, there's even another sewing machine in that cabinet!) NO shortage of hues of thread, either! But I HATE to sew. . .just don't ask me!

This is the view you experience when you step inside Studio One! The Antique Secretary was purchased at a nearby Antique Mall for a song. I absolutely fell in love when I saw it! One of the unique features is the fact that it is two pieces!!! My vintage dress form was a birthday gift from "Mr. Ed"!

this piece has been a wonderful display area for Handmade Cards with a Vintage Flair in the past. Now it is a source of storage for vintage books, cards and penning paraphernalia.

A marriage in Studio One, born from necessity to display various Handmade Cards with a Vintage Flair, brought about a store bought kitchen island with a vintage bookcase painted white! Now this unique piece houses my vintage suitcase display!

During my last Spring Fling craft show, I sold creamy ivory envelope bundles tied with twine, similar to those shown here in the bird letter holder. "Mr. Ed" made the chalkboard for the vintage blue frame I purchased @ Roadhouse Antiques years ago!

The perils of residing in Studio One and concrete floors have definitely made this bird blue.

A double basket full of light ~ to ~bright hued tulips make for elegant inspiration!

"Out On A Whim"!

Out on a whim, with nothing particular in mind, I stumbled upon this "great find" at our local Antique Shop, Roadhouse Antiques!

Yes! A "great find" indeed, for On Crooked Creek, is anything with Sunflowers!

AND. . . it's signed! Don't ask me who painted this lovely tray. . .but I'm lovin' how it looks in the kitchen On Crooked Creek!

The buttery yellow background of this thrifty tray is the same as our buttery yellow back splash tiles!

These handpainted Sunflowers appear to have come from
"Mr. Ed's" Sunflower Patch!

Even the variety of hues in each Sunflower is the same as those grown here On Crooked Creek!!!

The $5 price made this the sweetest find on a day when I was just "out on a whim"!

The look in my kitchen On Crooked Creek . . . priceless!!!

Love Is In The Air. . .

I L O V E decorating and re~arranging in my home!

Being fortunate to have accumulated many lovely decor items throughout our married life, I now enjoy rotating these items from room~to~room. This allows "Mr. Ed" and I variety On Crooked Creek.

Due to its size, changing out the Entertainment Center is one area that I tackle less frequently. After the Christmas decor was put away for the Season, I decided it was time for a lighter, airy, r o m a n t i c era to prevail On Crooked Creek!

In a past post titled, Affair of the Heart. . . I showcased the above handmade vintage hearts that were recently purchased at one of my favorite Antique Shops.

Being the hopeless r o m a n t i c that I am, I knew I wanted a
r o m a n t i c setting for the Entertainment Center. The vintage hearts gave me the inspiration I needed!

In keeping with the upcoming season, I chose birds and bunnies. Creamy ivory is one of my favorite home decor hues!

A Nell Hill's botanical print serves as a backdrop for my lacy ivory birds! The book chosen to heighten this vignette is titled, Chateau of Flowers The Romantic Story of Lily of the Valley.

The handmade vintage lace heart rest against a laser Nativity Scene tucked neatly inside the Peace on earth music box. I adore this creamy ivory vase with all its French Provincial detailing.

Disguising electronics can be quite tasking. To achieve this goal, I used a pair of creamy ivory cast iron bunnies for the bottom shelf aside "Mr.Ed's" mothers McCoy bowl of the same hue.

I adore music softly playing in the background On Crooked Creek, but I despise those hideous speakers! I'm always searching for subtle ways to disguise them...any hints would be most welcome, ladies!!!

This cutie, and his mate, perched on my collection of Hemingway books from my youth with some faux ivory morning glories helps to soften the H U G E speaker on the right. . .

. . .while an ivory, gold rimmed vintage ginger jar and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare appears to hide the speaker on the left!

The angled view as you enter from either the hall entry . . .

. . . or from the dining area aren't quite as distracting!

Continuing the creamy ivory palette and the r o m a n t i c theme to the right side was an easy task, indeed!

Except, of course, for that H U N K of a stereo system to create the beautiful Classic music that plays ever so sweetly On Crooked Creek! But, then. . .isn't that what an Entertainment Center is for, anyway!

The companion Nell Hill's botanical print is paired with my French Provincial busts. Our "first anniversary" gift from "Mr.Ed"! To balance this vignette, I chose The Poetry of Robert Frost, Edited by Edward Connery Lathem. Resting atop this collection of poems are the sweetest Robin's eggs in a tin can!

The newly purchased handmade vintage lace heart resting on an easel next to the gold clock presented to "Mr. Ed" upon his retirement from Kansas Department Of Transportation dated 1995 ~2011.

Neutral hued books and family photos fill in the open shelves on the bottom. Here are "Mr. Ed's" parents. . .

. . .and here are my parents. My father is the only living parent remaining. Mac will turn 90 in June!

Catalogs, CD's, DVD's,and directories are all stored out~of~sight in the willow baskets at the bottom of the televison.

Affair of the Heart. . .

Spending the past ten years On Crooked Creek has evolved into an Affair of the Heart. . .for me, it wasn't love at first sight.

Handmade lace heart is a recent purchase from Roadhouse Antiques.Features vintage buttons, lace, miniature locket, and pearls.

Although, I desperately wanted to be closer to our son and daughter~in~law. . .I was heart~broken at leaving the "dream house" behind. The house that "Mr. Ed" and I designed.

Handmade crazy quilt heart from Roadhouse Antiques. This miniature heart features vintage lace and a creamy satin rosebud.

Ours was, truly, unique. The "dream house" was designed through correspondence while "Mr. Ed" was serving his last unaccompanied tour of duty in Korea.

The final handmade lace heart purchased from Roadhouse Antiques. The handiwork of each of these with buttons, bows, lace and seed pearls is just amazing!

Arriving On Crooked Creek was not for the faint of heart. Years of neglect, a "flip house" for profit, yet ~ it was a "house with good bones". Our 1970's Ranch Style house lacked romance and character. These are the qualities "Mr. Ed" and I have worked diligently to instill over the past ten years.

Notice all the details of this lovely handmade heart. This locket is similar to one that I have belonging to my maternal grandmother.

I adore all the pearls used in this handmade lace heart. Pearls are what "Mr.Ed" brought me from Korea when he returned home.

Together, we had a vision of the home this house could become. With perseverance, limited knowledge, determination and hard work. . .On Crooked Creek has become an Affair of the Heart.

I adore the hand embroidery of this piece and the uniqueness of its palette.

Satin and velvets combined with creamy ivory lace and ribbon are such charming characteristics of this miniature handmade heart.

Dear Ones,
"Mr. Ed" and I were both born in "The Sunflower State". Since our retirement from active duty . . . every year . . . "Mr. Ed" has cultivated the soil within the perimeters of our garden and made a Sunflower Patch for me!!!

Double Take!

While visiting a local Antique Shop last week, Roadhouse Antiques, I came across an oil painting ~ signed~ yet unframed for $5. I was quite pleased ~not only with the reasonable price ~ but the subject matter of the painting.
It made me do a Double Take!

This oil painting of the birds in a vintage, galvanized pail hanging off the outdoor faucet is liken to that of an artifact "Mr. Ed" and I purchased while stationed in Germany.

When we saw this artifact in a shop in Germany, "Mr. Ed" and I were transformed back to his family farm on the Prairie of Kansas.

Birds nesting in a vintage farm pail on the Prairie is a natural occurrence. My beloved in~laws would not have disturbed this nest.

So~o~o. . .I knew these two would compliment each other for a Spring themed vignette On Crooked Creek. . .

. . .and needing to replace the Christmas vignette in the entry hall gave me a perfect place to perch the two.

Shopping the lower level On Crooked Creek, I brought up the wrought iron birdcage.

These faux moss spheres are velvety to the touch and appear to have bits of bird feathers in their composition.

The addition of the a birds nest adds to the authenticity.

NOT Just Another Pretty Plate!

Dear Ones,

I won't bore you with the "No More Dishes" that I continually hear from "Mr. Ed" throughout this post... but I have to share that these gratin dishes are. . .

NOT just another pretty plate!!!

Purchased on a recent shopping trip, I was hopeful that I would find four of these lovelies. I am, still on the search for one more.

So~o~o. . .in the meanwhile I will use these for "Mr. Ed" and I to enjoy eating our meals and left~overs from!

Since I am still employed part~time, I often times cook an entire recipe and then freeze a portion or serve enhanced left~overs!

Last week, I made a huge pot of spaghetti noodles and homemade spaghetti sauce.
"Mr. Ed" must have thought I'd invited guests without his knowledge. . .but I just decided to make an entire batch and only do the clean~up once! So~o~o. . .

out came the gratin dishes! I sprayed them with PAM Olive Oil, and began layering in the left~overs! First the spaghetti noodles. . .

Next, I spooned on an ample portion of the left~over spaghetti sauce.

Then, I topped it off with a blend of Three Italian grated cheeses.

...and baked it in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes. Just until the cheeses were melted and bubbling! The aroma that permeated the house was divine!

Of course, I had to set off those gratin dishes by placing them atop one of my restaurant oval platters!

These are not only pretty dishes...but clean~up was a breeze!

Left~over spaghetti served with mandarin oranges and pineapple chunks!

Lighter Look for 2012!

as in a s o f t e r hue for the built ~ in China Cabinet.

Removing all the vibrant hues from the China Cabinet and leaving only the creamy ivories, soft pinks, subtle purples and the whites of our heirloom China Rose China and our collected German Coffee Sets. . .

gives us a l i g h t e r look for 2011!

The soft pinks of these delicate roses on our heirloom China Rose pattern china with their platinum rims add much needed l i g h t and shimmer to our dark mahogany cupboard!

The upper shelf of the built~in China Cabinet is the only shelf that had the ample height to showcase the detailing of our heirloom china dinner plates. The German Coffee pot was taller than I had remembered ~ thus the display had to be re~arranged several times before I was pleased with the results.

I never tire of the intricate detailing of this Easter Tea Set! Sage green, soft pink and subtle purple against the creamy ivory give me immense pleasure each time I gaze upon the set. Even the pops of yellow are an appealing l i g h t contrast.

The Easter Tea Set combined with my vintage, pink fostoria cream and sugar for a continuing l i g h t e r look for the middle shelf of the built~in China Cabinet!

My antique, pink depression creamer and sugar paired with a small pitcher keep this l i g h t e r look along the entire length of the shelf.

My all time favorite cups and saucers gifted to me by my beloved mother~in~law!

I hope you can enjoy the interiors of these cups in the enhanced photos. The pink cup and saucer is my absolute favorite!

The completion of the German Coffee Set, resting on the bottom shelf, is a dessert set for six. Europeans must have begun that popular saying,

"Life is short ~ eat dessert first"!

"Mr. Ed" and I remember being invited into several German nationalist homes while serving in Germany . . . and eating dessert f i r s t !

Here is the first of four German Coffee Sets we purchased while serving in Germany! I adore the imprinted white lacey pattern of the china, the subtle purple flowers and the long curve to the spout! It appears to have vintage and art deco influences.

Another of my beloved mother~in~laws footed tea cups. This one has hues of aqua blue with all the sage greens, soft pinks,subtle purples and pops of yellow!

The final cup in our l i g h t e r look for 2011 is one of my MoMa's tea cups. I don't remember it ever having a saucer, perhaps that's the reason it now resides in the built~in China Cabinet On Crooked Creek. Unique ~ and slightly askew ~ like me!

Work Horse!

Arriving On Crooked Creek , we have been abundantly blessed!
Our 1970's Ranch Style home contains four bedrooms ~
three of which are located on the upper level.

Directly across from the Master Bedroom ~ and facing the neighborhood lined cul~de~sac is our Work Horse!

Work Horse in this context refers to our home office On Crooked Creek!

This room houses and eclectic mix of furnishings, "Mr.Ed" and I spent many weekends armed with paint brushes, drop cloths and stencils until all the mismatched pieces had a unified decor look!

A Montgomery Ward, maple, Early American desk purchased early in our marriage for "Mr. Ed's" desk. The bottom half was painted black on the back, sides and behind the drawer fronts. The open hutch was made by our son in his early years of Shop class from scrap pine and received a complete coat of black paint. "Mr. Ed" backed the hutch with pine paneling to mimic one I had seen at our local Ethan Allen show room.

All the shelves are filled with the necessary items to keep our Work Horse running in top shape! This is the look we put together after arriving On Crooked Creek. . .

. . .here a more streamlined look after the new carpet was installed in 2011!

Yes! We still use an answering machine!

Housed behind these "stable doors" of the armoire is our computer, copier, and some filing drawers! The vignette atop the armoire was changed to feature the two of us. The storage boxes hold keepsake cards, graduation and wedding announcements.

My Moma's love seat! An heirloom piece that had rolling casters until "Mr. Ed" changed out the legs! The throw and pillows camouflage the worn cushions!

The living room coffee table turned sideways makes a perfect side table for the love seat. This is a great place to read a book and there's just enough room for a cup of coffee or tea!

This VCR cabinet contains stationary. . .occasional cards, note pads and Christmas cards! This is how the cabinet was staged when we arrived On Crooked Creek. . .

and here's the change since the Fall of 2011!

Seating changes came about after I began having back problems. On Crooked Creek left the "old grey mares" behind. . .

and in their place is a new, more sleek, saddle back desk chair

that fits my back to a "T"!

From paying the bills, to checking e~mails...designing and posting my blog, and hearing from all of you. This home office gets a work~out every day On Crooked Creek. Therefore the name Work Horse lovingly applies!

Farmhouse French

On Crooked Creek is located near the Southern edge of our town. One block South of us begins a Tree Farm with a rural area between our town and the next. And while our Ranch Style home is definitely not "country", I adore the new French Farmhouse decor!

Shortly after "Mr. Ed" renovated the lower level On Crooked Creek, we purchased a smaller round table for our dining area. I've been looking for a few "seasons" for new dining room chairs.

While on our Annual Trout Fishing Trip to Bennett Spring State Park, I found these two vintage oak "farmhouse" chairs. "Mr. Ed" and I each have our own definition for the meaning "catch of the day"!

I adore the wide ladder back effect...and the way the back piece attaches to the seat. The seats are leather. The addition of cushions from our previous dining chairs make seating more pleasant. Although, it may involve me using a sewing machine...I have a plan for those seat cushions!

To bring a bit more of the farmhouse decor to the dining area, I used this gorgeous sun shining day to revamp our china cabinet!

Now that the heirloom silver tea set is residing on the vintage tea cart in the living room, I brought out my French Country lamp to pair with the new Sunflower print.

This vintage ironstone bowl belonged to my beloved Mother ~in~law. The hues from the vintage bowl and the comtemporary print blend harmoniously.

I added the restaurant pitcher "Mr.Ed" purchased for me during Christmas. The banding on the white leans more towards the blue ~ green family. Tying the hues together in this vignette.

My very first restaurant plate combined with my first creamy ivory, oval serving platter take their place of honor to the right of the cabinet! Placing them on easels gives them greater presence and keeps them safe for display!

Placing a few individual serving dishes in a primitive, wooden, divided box keeps the farmhouse theme. The addition of my three widely used cookbooks are now easily accessible for reference and inspiration!

An earthenware brown pitcher holds vintage kitchen utensils, both are heirlooms from either sides of our families.

The formal China Rose pink, white and silver china seemed out of place. It was easily located to the built~in china cabinet transitioning from the dining area to the living room. In its place. . .my Homer Laughlin Epicure Turquoise Aqua china!

It's been a busy day On Crooked Creek! I have basked in the rays of the sun's energy to accomplish a Farmhouse French look for our home. One I'm feeling right at home in. . . in our urban setting!

Studio One has, once again, become my Art Studio! Many of my former display items have been sold in a recent Tag $ale. The closing of my handmade card business was a choice of heart. I plan to spend much needed time with "Mr. Ed" in his retirement!

Previously, this vintage Tea Cart was used in my booth at our local Spring Fling for display. I found this beauty on Craig's List and purchased it locally. It has been in Studio One since its arrival On Crooked Creek. . .until recently.

Once the Christmas Tree was carried to the storage closet on the lower level, a huge vacancy in the living room made me re~evaluate what would fill that voided spot. The vintage Tea Cart is a "perfect" fit!

I am a Traditionalist. . .to a point. . in home decorating! This Tea Cart would be the best place to display my heirloom silver Tea Set! When I was gifted with my MoMa's Tea Set, my Dad brought a silver plated tray (Made in Hong Kong) for it to rest upon. Not the tray that I was accustomed to seeing in my childhood. For years, I have been searching for a more fitting silver tray.

Treasure #7. . .

Of course, it took an hour and a half of silver polish and "elbow grease" to bring this elegantly, footed, handled, curved silver tray to its former glory!

I am totally grateful that someone gave up this exquisite tray and placed it for sale in their booth at our local Antique Mall! Perhaps the "price was right" because of its blackened condition!

Due to its ample size, I was able to bring out the heirloom silver candelabra and a condiment holder to enhance the top shelf of the Tea Cart.

The pattern is so delicate. . .almost lacey all around the perimeter of the tray.

Scallops add interest to the outward edges of the tray. Those handles are massive; however making transfer of the tray an easy task.

Look closely and you will see the feet of the tray! Although no name is embedded on the bottom, there is a series of four digits under each foot.

The middle shelf is a great space to house our ice bucket and a silver tray of glasses. Hot tea ~ will become iced tea ~ with the onset of Summer On Crooked Creek!

The bottom shelf will suffice as a Seasonal display. Since the Christmas decor has been returned to the lower level, I've chosen to showcase my large bunnies.

Today, On Crooked Creek it is SNOWing. . . so~o~o. . .we'll call these SNOW bunnies!

Amazing how Treasure Hunting not only brought about new purchases On Crooked Creek, but also, new changes . . .new beginnings in our journey.

"Mr. Ed" and I are about to enjoy a "cup of tea", together, as we watch the SNOW falling on the deck On Crooked Creek.

Treasure Hunting. . .

I am so grateful to live in an area where convenience is in abundance! Within a few miles of On Crooked Creek, one can dine finely, shop easily, find inspiration. . . and yet, every once in a while. . .I just have to "get the heck outa' Dodge"! On those occasions, "Mr. Ed" and I take to Treasure Hunting. . .

Treasure #1, #2 and #3 . . .

I've been looking for some empty milk bottles to fill a vintage wire carrier for quite some time. The monogram G on the Golden Royal milk bottle caught my eye! I adore the detailing! The red is a "great find" for my kitchen On Crooked Creek!

Now...these two, at first glance, appeared to be a match in shape. Even this photo is misleading! However the taller vintage milk bottle(quart) is more square at the base; whereas the smaller vintage milk bottle (pint) is more round at its base.

"Mr. Ed" states the pint bottle is similar to the ones he drank milk from in grade school. He is several years older than I. Had I drank milk at school, it would have come from a waxed paper carton. Allergies made it impossible for me to partake!

Treasure #4. . .

My first restaurant plate!!! Ladies, I nearly danced to the counter with this find! I am acquiring quite a collection of restaurant serving dishes...but this is my first plate! You know what they say..."The Thrill of the Hunt"...Oh, yeah...I was definitely feeling the adrenalin rush when I spotted this treasure!

Treasure #5. . .

Au gratin dishes! Oh, how I wish there'd been four! I've already used these "great finds" On Crooked Creek and will post that recipe in the near future!!!

I was quite smitten with their oval shape, deep interior and the delicate shell design on the handles! They have that creamy ivory hue that I adore! These aren't dishwasher safe, but they washed up so nicely, I don't seem to mind!

Treasure #6. . .

A creamy ivory hued vintage oval serving platter! I adore the delicate swirl design around the edges! This is my first vintage serving platter! All the white dishes and the restaurant plate were found at the same Antique Shop in Newton, Kansas!

Treasure #7. . .

will have to wait for another post. I didn't photograph the treasure by itself...and I'm still working on the final outcome of its announcement On Crooked Creek. I do hope you'll stop by again soon for its reveal!

"Mr. Ed" found a treasure, also! He purchased the VCR (can't get much more vintage than that) of Dances With Wolves! He watches the black & white with VCR movies while riding his stationary bicycle in the lower level On Crooked Creek since his retirement!

There's just something so uplifting and inspiring about arriving On Crooked Creek with newly acquired treasures. Just the "pick me up" and motivation I needed to get those creative ideas going once again!

NEW Brunswick Stew!

Normal January temperatures bring on the need for warmer winter dinners On Crooked Creek. This new recipe for Brunswick Stew using pulled pork warms the entire body head ~to~toe!

This hearty and delicious vegetable soup makes enough soup for a large crowd!

"Mr. Ed" and I only made half this recipe and still froze two containers for later use!

Brunswick Stew

3 quarts chicken broth

1 (2 lb) bag frozen baby lima beans

1 (2 lb) bag frozen niblet corn

1 lb red potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch pieces

1 large yellow onion, chopped

2 (28oz) cans diced tomatoes, undrained

1 cup hickory ~ flavored barbecue sauce

2 tablespoons hot sauce

2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 lbs smoked pulled pork

Directions:

* In a large Dutch oven or stock pot, bring chicken broth to a boil over medium~ high heat.

Add limas, corn, potatoes and onion. Return to a boil.

Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes.

* Add tomatoes, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, salt and pepper ~ stirring to combine.

Stir in pork. Simmer for 15 minutes.

Remember ladies ~ this is 1/2 of the above recipe!!!

Our favorite soup bowls, On Crooked Creek, are these double handled golden ones.

An oval restaurant single serving dish is a perfect addition for a homemade biscuit!

While I was setting the table ~ "Mr.Ed" whipped up a batch of homemade biscuits.

His favorite of the batch is the smallest one sitting atop the others ~ made from all the leftover cut out scraps of dough.

I declare it must be a flashback from his childhood!!!

"Mr. Ed's" biscuits are always eaten with strawberry jelly or preserves. . . mine with butter or perhaps a drizzle of honey!

On Crooked Creek, "Mr. Ed" and I will be snuggled warmly inside when the seasonably cold January temperatures arrive. One of our defenses against the frigid cold ~ our NEW Brunswick Stew.

No New Year Resolutions here On Crooked Creek;
however there seems to be quite a bit of excess baggage that certainly needs to be dealt with!

2012 . . . Excess Baggage!

The excess baggage in this post refers to my vintage luggage or suitcase collection.

The baggage shown above is a Samsonite Train Case and Overnight Bag similar to the ones my maternal grandmother, Susie used when she traveled from Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri to Garden Grove, California to visit her youngest daughter, Norma Jean. Grandma Ford called her baggage her "grip"!

A vintage brown, hard shell suitcase with leather edges and a paper interior called an Overnight or Satchel.

Another vintage brown, Samsonite overnight suitcase complete with keys!

From t o o many Christmases past, was the gift of a three ~ piece red Samsonite Suitcase set. Each suitcase closed and then fit nicely inside the other. The largest, called the weekender; the medium size, called traveler; and finally the smallest, called the overnighter. The only remaining piece of my luggage is the overnighter and being in terrible array...I decoupaged it to conceal its battle scars.

. . . and sometimes excess baggage is put on display.

Winter Wonderland Tablescape!

If only it would S N O W On Crooked Creek!!! I love S N O W!
But. . .since we've had no measurable amounts of S N O W. . .I made a Winter Wonderland Tablescape!!!

After taking down the dining room Christmas Tree On Crooked Creek, I decided it was time for a new color palette in keeping with the Season. I love S N O W ! SO~o~o. . . I brought the S N O W inside!

First I put on my flea market "great find" $5 S N O W flake tablecloth! Next, I added my after Christmas $ale silver chargers. Then the layering of dinner ware. . . my Homer Laughlin, Epicure turquoise blue hued dinner plates, followed by my vintage white lace dinner plates and topped of with my Gold Crown Life Time China Co. dessert / salad plates from Alliance, Ohio! Finishing touches of a freshly pressed aqua napkin and our everyday beaded stainless steel flatware! We're using our plain stemware as it mimics the shape of the candlesticks.

Shopping the kitchen and china cabinets On Crooked Creek provided the necessary items to make this three~tiered centerpiece! A serving platter from our everyday porcelain white dinnerware, a creamy ivory leaf embossed serving bowl and a crystal and frosted glass compote with etching!

I worked some faux pine needle garland around each base and added faux silver holly leaves to enhance the arrangement. Next came silver S N O W flakes and bronze and silver glass pine cone ornaments. In the compote I placed a frosted glass votive with the sweetest smelling candle scent, Wintercream, surrounded by an ivory pip candle ring.

The creamy ivory S N O W flake runner is a perfect fit for our round dining table On Crooked Creek. Each individual S N O W flake has a bronze hue to accent the delicate stitching. To either side of the centerpiece I added my silver candlesticks with sage green molted hued candlesticks. A glass ring with a golden band and ivory pip candle rings sits atop each candlestick.

At each place setting, I set a frosted glass votive with the sweetly scented Wintercream candle and an ivory pip candle ring. The ambiance is utterly romantic!

It's Good for You! #1

Dear Ones,
Just before Christmas, I went in for a routine test. NOT a good thing! My test results were good; however the after ~ effects were NOT! I missed my first day from work in nearly four years, had two other tests taken, and am just now getting back on my feet.

So~o~o. . .
after nearly two weeks of soft foods, I decided (now that my stomach was beginning to take on a more solid diet) it was time for eating healthy! "Mr. Ed" and I went on a scavenger hunt through our local grocer while trying to find all the ingredients needed for this healthy recipe!

The thrill of the hunt was beneficial!
Low fat, Low cholesterol and Low calorie. . . this recipe is a keeper!!!

Creamy Spinach Ravioli

1 package (8 ounces) mushrooms, sliced

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup diced red bell pepper

2 packages (9 ounces each) refrigerated light cheese~filled ravioli

2 garlic cloves, pressed

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

3 ounces reduced~fat cream cheese (Neufchatel)

1/3 cup fat~free half & half

1 package (10 ounces) frozen creamed spinach in low~fat sauce, thawed

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Slice mushrooms, chop onion and red bell pepper.

Cook ravioli according to package directions.

Drain and return to pan;cover and keep warm.

Meanwhile over medium heat, spray a skillet with nonstick cooking spray; add mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, garlic and black pepper.

Cook and stir 3 ~ 4 minutes or until vegetables are tender

and all liquid is absorbed.

Reduce heat to low; add cream cheese and half~and~half.

Stir until cream cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.

Stir in creamed spinach.

Simmer over low heat 1 ~2 minutes or until heated through.

Place ravioli on a 9 X 13 serving platter.

Pour vegetable mixture over ravioli. Serve immediately.

Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Makes : 6 servings.

Amazingly how the words associated with the Christmas season are seen through our holiday decor! Here On Crooked Creek. . .there's one word we enjoy showcasing at Christmas. . . simply
N O E L!

I purchased this redware N O E L plate last year during Christmas open house at one of my favorite shops on the Prairie in Fort Scott, Kansas ~ The Iron Star! It makes a vibrant statement on the built~in china buffet On Crooked Creek!

In keeping with our Rustic Christmas on the Prairie theme, I've surround the redware N O E L plate with all the natural elements On Crooked Creek held!

A wrought iron tray filled with pine cones from our years in Colorado! Although these were all found in the same area, the hues vary from light ~ to ~ dark.

Vintage spools used as candle sticks each holds a single knobby taper in the deepest caramel hue surrounded by wispy sprigs of cranberry, mustard and navy berries.

The same hues are found in this majolica tea set. One of my favorite sets for display On Crooked Creek!

The earthen green pottery jars purchased @ Nell Hill's in Briarcliff Village during our Kansas City Anniversary Trip this year are filled to the rim with more Colorado pine cones! Garlands of faux evergreen boughs are added to the base to soften the look.

Can you imagine my delight in finding this duplicate N O E L plate ornament when I returned to Iron Star's after Christmas $ale?

N O E L ~ a French derivative. . . meaning C h r i s t m a s in English!

The First Noel ~ a vivid narrative of the story of Christ birth ~ happens to be my very favorite of the Christmas Hymns! On Crooked Creek will be ever on the look ~ out for more N O E L decor items in the years to come. For Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year!!!

Christmas Tree Times Three!

This Christmas On Crooked Creek is cutting back on the usual Seasonal decor. Since we aren't hosting Christmas On Crooked Creek, I decided to o n l y put up t h r e e Christmas Trees!

Our Rustic Christmas On The Prairie showcases our Lodge Tree this year on the upper level living room all dressed in bronze, gold and brown. A creamy ivory angel sits atop the highest bough while a creamy ivory, scalloped quilt is used in place of a tree skirt at the bottom.

Instead of tinsel garland, I used a 3 ~ inch wide natural fiber ribbon in bronze tone to accentuate all the natural elements affixed to the branches.

Twig balls and pine cones look lovely with our Traditional bronze, gold and mocha hued ornaments and icicles. I tucked in faux twigs to enhance the Rustic Christmas On The Prairie appeal.

This creamy ivory, scalloped quilt adds a layer of softness at the base of this natural element, Rustic Christmas Tree On Crooked Creek.

"Mr.Ed" and I chose a Coppertone Christmas Dining room to harmonize with our Rustic Christmas On The Prairie since both rooms connect with one another.

This skinny 4 foot tree sits in a half round wicker basket!
I love S N O W . . .so we kept this tree with a hint of the Seasonal weather. I adore this tree topper! Designed after a vintage bed spring with a burst of snowflakes at the top, one can't help but smile!!!

I found these glass tree ornaments at an Antique Shop. When placed in front of the bulb they appear to be illuminated!

These miniature "plates" from Nell Hill's have to be my all time favorite ornament! Their creamy ivory background and soft rimmed gold edges are a perfect accent for this Coppertone Christmas Dining Room Tree!

A half round, wicker basket sits at the side of our oak buffet year ~ round! No need to use a tree skirt; however, the pine cones tucked around the base are in keeping with the natural theme On Crooked Creek this year!

A perfect "pencil" size to set near our dining room table enhancing our meal times On Crooked Creek!

Coppertone Christmas Dining Room Tree. . . Tree #2!

Browsing at a local Antique Mall, I happened upon a pink feather tree measuring 32" inches in height! I was smitten! For two years this tree has resided in my Art Studio. . .but this year ~ On Crooked Creek. . . it is residing in the Master Bedroom!

This star tree topper is actually a metal ornament! I adore the silver and gold of this star! Its message is Peace, Love, Joy!

Each ornament is hand tied to the tree using a sheer 2 ~inch pink wire edged ribbon!

Round, vintage, pink glass ornaments are mixed with teardrop nostalgia ornaments. Look closely to see the crystal, glass garland used to enhance and illuminate the feather tree.

Each year, when I remove the ornaments from the tree, I leave the pink, sheer wire edged ribbon attached. It is time consuming to re ~ thread the ribbon through the ornament top. Fragile as they are, I fear breakage!

I adore the romantic era of this vintage feather tree. So placing it in a corner of the Mater Bedroom On Crooked Creek seemed to be the perfect place for it to reside!

This Christmas Tree needs no extra illumination. The sun shining through the windows reflects in the glass ornaments giving this feather tree a "natural" glow!

The i's and t's. . .

Dear Ones,

It's Official. . .

the i's have all been dotted. . .and the t's have all been crossed. . .

"Mr. Ed" has retired!!!

Nearly seventeen years ago, "Mr. Ed" began working for the Kansas Department of Transportation in South East Kansas! Ten years ago, he transferred to the K.D.O.T. Hillside Shop in North Wichita. Today was officially his last day!

He was honored with a delicious and divinely decorated cake by one of his co~workers!
Donna made a work of art and of heart!

Making this day even more memorable, he was showered with a clock, cards and gifts!

Surrounded by family. . .

co~workers present and past. . .

all made this celebration a culmination of years of service come to a well deserved end!

Supportive family by his side, we all look forward to spending much more time together! For now, "Mr. Ed" has one of the best gifts of all. . .the gift of time!

Happy Retirement. . . "Mr. Ed"!

Coppertone Christmas Dining. . .

Staying in tune with the Rustic Christmas decor On Crooked Creek proved a bit challenging for this Traditional decor home. I've spent many days researching through my inspirational magazines.

As each Season changes On Crooked Creek...so does the look of our dining room chandelier. I've used two evergreen pics topped with snow and pine cones to unify our Rustic Christmas theme. Then...I made a huge, poofy coppertone bow!!!

Here you catch a glimpse of the china hutch in the background. Notice how the coppertone bow harmonizes well with the oak wood tone?

I adore that poofy, coppertone bow with it's curling tails!!!Let's go down and take a look at the centerpiece, shall we???

A simple $2.00 Gordman's, rectangular, creamy ivory tray. I chose a square, battery operated, creamy ivory pillar candle for the center. Tying a natural fiber, square bow around it's middle helps disguise the Traditional pillar. I surrounded the candle with wispy sprigs of evergreen and pine cones similar to those used on the chandelier above. Copper and bronze glitter ornaments tied with gold satin ribbons add to the illumination from the candlelight!

This angled photo shot shows all the elements used in this simple, Rustic Christmas centerpiece. Using the tray makes the centerpiece easily moved from the table ~ if our meal has ample courses.

Here you can begin to see the coppertone, diamond patterned, overlay topper and the everyday white dishes for most our meals On Crooked Creek.

By angling the square, diamond patterned topper, the corner points flow gracefully off the table at each place setting.

Using our silver chargers reflects the light and keeps the overall table calm. The patterned floral napkin keeps the unity of the bronze, copper, gold, creamy ivory, and green color palette.

This rim photo shot shows the effective layering for each place setting. Charger, dinner plate, dessert / salad plate, topped off with an additional saucer.

On Crooked Creek our everyday white dinnerware was chosen for its versatility. While "Mr. Ed" states the center of the saucer appears to be an oak leaf cluster or a poinsettia. . . to me. . .it's unmistakably, always been a S N O Wflake!!!

Cups and saucers are used mainly during our breakfast On Crooked Creek; however with the on~set of cooler Seasonal temperatures, a cup of hot tea finishes off our evening meals!

While snapping photos of this place setting. . . I couldn't help noticing how the appearance of the bubble glass mimics that of a S N O Wglobe!

Our vintage ladder back, farmhouse, dining chairs (found while vacationing this Fall) are calling to be decked in vintage Christmas stockings. Believe me, I've been looking! In the meanwhile. . . I tied this sprig of evergreen with green berries and pine cone with another coppertone ribbon!

The striped chair cushions from the lower level dining area will suffice for now On Crooked Creek. The hues are a perfect accent with our Coppertone Christmas Dining. . .

"Mr. Ed" and I will be spending our meals gathered 'round this Coppertone Christmas dining table. Together we will be facing new challenges of adapting to his retirement.

On Crooked Creek. . . this is one adaptation and challenge I'm looking forward to having! Time for "Mr. Ed" and I to share our lives. . .and our meals together.

Left~over Ham!

As I was sorting through the freezer On Crooked Creek this week. . .
I came across a package of Thanksgiving Ham! Hm~m~m...then I found this flyer from our local grocer! "Mr. Ed" and I agree this is a keeper recipe.

So~o~o. . .
put this one in your file for future use when you don't know what to do with the left~over Christmas Ham!

Hash Brown Potato Quiche

Hash Brown Potato Quiche:

3 cups frozen hash brown potatoes

1/3 cup butter, melted

1 cup cooked ham, chopped

1 cup (4 0z) Cheddar cheese, shredded

1/4 cup bell pepper, chopped

1/4 cup onion, finely chopped

1 jalapeno chili, finely chopped (optional)

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. black pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Pat the potatoes over the bottom of an ungreased 9~inch pie plate.

Drizzle the butter over the potatoes, and pat them securely into place.

Bake for 25 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350degrees F.

While the potatoes are baking...chop all your fresh ingredients!

Layer the ham, cheese, bell pepper, onion and jalapeno chili

over the baked potato crust.

Whisk the eggs, milk, salt and pepper in a bowl until blended.

Pour over the prepared layers.

Bake for 25 minutes . . .

or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Refrigerate any leftovers.

Serves 8.

On Crooked Creek, we served ours with Tropical Fruit Salad and coffee! However, in the future we have decided to add homemade biscuits and perhaps a strip of bacon or two for a festive...after the holidays breakfast!!!

Our first accumulating snowfall of the 2011 Season is predicted to arrive this weekend on the Prairie! Just in time for my birthday...yeah! For those of you who don't already know . .

So~o~o. . .in the Entry Hall, I made a tribute to the one Season that delivers S N O W!!!

It's a Winter Wonderland of S N O W!!!
With all of my favorite S N O W decor items of the Season!

The newest addition to my collection is Frosty himself angled to greet you as you enter from the kitchen and the out~of~doors! At his feet sets the silver plated S N O Wglobe gifted from Christmases past from my son and daughter~in~law!

Mesmerizing S N O W flakes anytime! This treasured piece sets out all year 'round On Crooked Creek. . .only the location changes from Season~to~Season!

I adore using suitcases for display! This vintage suitcase is one of many from my collection in the Studio.

Loaded down with treasures of S N O W accessories! One of my favorite Seasonal sayings, warm, creamy ivory mittens, over~sized ornaments that look like S N O Wballs,the cutest little S N O Wman pillow and a tartan plaid throw!

"Mr. Ed" is often heard saying,
" You don't need another Christmas Tree!"

This feather tree was a "great find" at the Church Craft Show. The same year I found these adorable beige miniature S N O Wflake ornaments!

The S N O Wflake feather tree makes a perfect backdrop for Frosty's top hat!

Wall scones On Crooked Creek are decorated with Holly and Ivy and deep green poofy bows! Berry sprigs were added at the base of the creamy ivory battery candles to soften the glass and wrought iron.

A welcoming wreath of pepper berries, pine cones and evergreens! I adore this deep green ribbon with black wired edging for poofing!

I often put two (or more) wreaths together, as shown here. The appearance is fuller, richer! Each wreath was priced under $5. For less than $10. . . an amazing looking wreath!

A Holly and Ivy swag purchased in an after~Christmas $ale flanks the vintage wooden Clipper sled that belongs to "Mr. Ed". Fond memories, now precious stories, are often reminisced each year when we display this treasured heirloom On Crooked Creek.

Rustic Christmas on the Prairie. . .

This year, "Mr. Ed" and I wanted a simpler, more relaxed look for our Christmas decor. Instead of the Traditional red and green that usually fills the upper level, we choose a more Rustic Christmas on the Prairie.

By bringing the Lodge Tree up from the lower level living family room with all it's bronze, gold, and brown ornaments, the change was relatively easy! The only purchase was the wide natural wire ribbon used for garland!

Come closer and we'll watch the transformation step~ by~ step!

The backdrop is the first thing I tackle On Crooked Creek. Getting those wreaths hung in the window can be quite challenging when you're 5 foot 2!!! It usually takes many trips up and down the ladder to assure they are all at the same level!

Identical is the look I'm after! "Mr. Ed" is great help...he even photographed for me after my discussion concerning the electrical cords.

Using the same wide ribbon for the wreaths as the well as the garland gives that rustic look and unifies the natural appearance. The texture of this ribbon is smooth, not at all like burlap, and has a golden sheen with the reflection of the light!

The use of wired ribbon allows me to shape the bow and give it a full, puffy effect! I adore bows!

Now you can see how important it was to level all the wreaths and poof the bows. This makes a striking backdrop for the star of the living room. . . our Lodge Christmas Tree!

The Lodge Christmas Tree is something I won during a Christmas Tree Open House at our local Floral Store in South East Kansas. The tree trunk itself appears to have come from a rough cut log and the branches are huge!

The pine cones and twig balls come already attached to the branches! The addition of 300 lights makes a radiant glow throughout the room!

The only other textural element added is the faux twigs strategically placed into the branches for a more authentic appearance!

Next comes the ornaments and icicles!!!

Instead of using a store bought tree skirt, I opted using a creamy ivory, quilted, scalloped throw from Victorian Heart! The softness is amazing at the base of the tree. The softer hue reflects the light from above and compliments the new carpeting On Crooked Creek!

The Christmas Tree On Crooked Creek isn't complete without our precious porcelain Angel in her place of honor at the top! Her creamy ivory dress with golden accents brings a unity to the entire decor of the tree.

The calm serenity of a Rustic Christmas on the Prairie is just what I was dreaming of. . . On Crooked Creek!

Christmas Present. . .

Our Family Christmas Tradition is to alternate hosting the occasion with our son and daughter~in~law.

We hosted Christmas On Crooked Creek last year. So~o~o...with that being said, "Mr. Ed" and I are doing things a bit differently here for our Season's holiday decor.

It is Christmas in

in the air.

I adore this saying! On Crooked Creek, in keeping with a Traditional flair, has added many rustic elements into our Christmas decorating. The Traditional hues of reds and golds has changed somewhat, as well!

"The Resident Decorator" On Crooked Creek has graciously allowed the use of his p r i z e d deer sheds! I adore how this one encompasses the porcelain plague easeled for display.

This creamy ivory vase is a favorite On Crooked Creek! Through the years it has been simply used as a Traditional arts 'de object. For this Season, and in keeping with our more rustic Christmas theme, I've filled it with pheasant feathers.

Left ~over Turkey!!!

Goodness!
...it seems every year we look for those 12 lb. turkeys @ the grocer
...and every year it seems they just get larger and larger!!! This year our turkey was a whopping 14 lbs.! So~o~o...what to do with all that left~over turkey??? Make Turkey Soup!

Turkey Soup:

1 to 1 1/2 cups roughly chopped, cooked turkey
1/3 cup uncooked minute rice
1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 bay leaf
1 small bunch parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
3 cups water
1 cup chicken stock
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Saute the celery and onion in the tablespoon of butter.
Add water, chicken stock and chopped vegetables.
Bring to a boil over medium ~ high heat.
Cook until vegetables are tender 5 ~ 7 minutes.
Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Add the rice and left ~ over turkey. Simmer about 5 minutes.
Remove the bay leaf.
Serves 4.

This is a hearty soup and only needs a slice of crusty bread or crackers!
Perfect with any left ~ over pecan or pumpkin pie!!!
