Nine years ago, "Mr Ed" and I planted six strawberry plants On Crooked Creek.
Year ~ by ~ year we watched the plants produce gorgeous, delicate white blossoms to be followed shortly by small green fruit. BUT ~ we never had any ripened fruit. Birds, rabbits, squirrels ~ something always devoured the fruit before it reached maturity.
Over the years, six plants dwindled to three. Now ~ only one, lonely strawberry plant survives On Crooked Creek.
Our Spring temperatures have been all over the mercury On Crooked Creek ranging from 33 degrees to a record high of 100 degrees! The past two weeks we've seen showers and sunshine with temperatures in the mild 60's ~ 70's. The herb and flower gardens have managed to survive and thrive On Crooked Creek despite the unsettling weather.
As "Mr. Ed" and I have made our rounds to pull weeds and stake tender stems, we've watched ever so closely the progression of this lonely strawberry plant.
With ever so firm and even pressure, I picked my first ripened berry!!! Cradling it carefully in the palm of my hand, I carried it indoors and washed it ever so gently.
Even in my single serving ironstone bowl it looks minute!
Here the tiny berry becomes the star in my crystal salt cellar. I placed my first fruit in the refrigerator to indulge with my weekend breakfast. I was amazed that the fruit was a vibrant pink throughout. . . and the sweet taste was divine!
But , alas ~ what have we here? Can it be? Yes. . .another ripening berry !
On Crooked Creek. . .
This could be the start of something big!
Until next time. . .
hahhhaaa...you are so cute.
ReplyDeletePoor little tiny lonely berry. Well, with that second one popping up, who knows...you may have a BERRY FARM before you know it...right there ON CROOKED CREEK. :))))
What a sweet post! YOu one delicious strawberry looked so cute all alone in that bowl!
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping you have a harvest!
Yvonne
How exciting to see the fruit come to ripening...we had but a few berries this year and alas a over zealous toddler who picked them all green.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the fruits of your patience and may there be many more to come.
Blessings Kelsie
Oh my goodness! That is one TOUGH strawberry plant! Can they spread and make more plants?
ReplyDeleteI love strawberries!
Lou Cinda :)
Dear Ones,
ReplyDeleteThe count is up to four strawberries...perhaps, in time there will be enough to fill a whole bowl! "Mr. Ed" & I shared the first strawberry. Sweet, I know. The second, I showed to my granddog after picking. Gulp...he found it delicious! HA! Numbers three and four went in my Cherrios!. . . and so it goes On Crooked Creek!
Fondly,
Pat
What a cute story. I think you could make a child's storybook out of it. (really)...
ReplyDeleteI hope your strawberry bush brings much fruit! Patience pays off, doesn't it? Hope your week is off to good start!
Hi Pat! Seeing your strawberries reminds me of sneaking a few from my grandmother's patch when I was a little girl! lol And I love the bird tablescape in your previous post...lovely! Happy week!...hugs...Debbie
ReplyDeletePat..LOL I know what you're talking about. That little strawberry plant looks just like the two in my garden. Ours came back from last year but aren't producing. There must be some trick to growing those big beautiful strawberried... maybe I'll "Google" it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sweet comments about our new granson.
