Bar~B~Que Meat Balls!

What's On The Menu?

Bar~B~Que Meatballs!!! This week On Crooked Creek is sharing my best "potluck" recipe! I've carried this dish to church "potluck" dinners, funeral dinners, graduation parties, get well for ailing friends, social gatherings, teachers luncheons. . .any and everywhere. One thing remains the same. . .I always bring home and empty pan ~ and the request for the recipe!!!

This recipe comes from one of those fund raiser cookbooks. This one is near and dear to "Mr. Ed's" and my heart. It is a collection of recipes from members of our previous community in an effort to preserve the Elementary School where "Mr.Ed" attended. That school is now the City Public Library. My Moma was the first President of the Library at its founding. . .later, I served as President for 10 of our 15 years there.

Bar~B~Que Meat Balls:

3 lbs. hamburger                          2 c. oatmeal
2 tsp. salt                                       1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 c. chopped onions                      1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 c. evaporated milk                     2 eggs
2 tsp. chille powder

Mix together and make large meatballs.

Sauce:

2 c. catsup*                                      1/2 c. chopped onions
2 Tbsp. liquid smoke**                 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 to 1 c. brown sugar                  2 Tbsp. honey ***

Heat all and pour over meatballs.
Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
                                                                              Edna Gorman

Yields:  36 ~ 48 large meatballs!
(I plan on 3 to 4 meatballs per person!)

Substitutions:
   * 1 c. catsup and 1 c. barbecue sauce.
 ** Worcestershire sauce.
***Not in the original recipe.
Something I added to enhance the sweetness of the sauce!

This recipe will make two pans full. One for eating. One for freezing if you're NOT taking this dish to a "pot luck". I have also made this recipe into two meatloaves.

On Crooked Creek has some useful kitchen utensils that make cooking a breeze! This vintage ice cream scoop is the one my MoMa used to make our homemade ice cream cones in the Summer months on the Prairie. It is used often for making meat balls, monster cookies, and salmon patties!!!

Another handy kitchen necessity On Crooked Creek is my batter bowl! It is, literally, used everyday!

These look good and would make really good pot luck fare!!! I can see why you bring home only empty dishes!

Dear Ones,
If you're having trouble seeing the sauce should read 1/2 c. chopped onions! Sorry for any inconvenience! Thanks to Pinky for letting me know!!!
Fondly,
Pat

Oh Pat, this recipe looks so yummy! I am taking dinner to a friend this week. I will make a pan for her and freeze a pan for my weekend guests. I can probably put them in a slow cooker to heat up and we can have them for lunch!
Wonderful! So many who visit ON THE MENU MONDAY will really enjoy this delicious recipe!
